I own many sailing books. Some which I have purchased over the time, others that were given to me and some that I have won. But there are so many sailing/yachting books out there, so which one is the best, and why?

I have two copies of Manfred Currey on Tactics in the 1930s.

If you have the chance these are a must.

How come no one has said the book that we all have and have read (mabe)?

The "Blue Book"!

Actually the only sailing books i have read were the ones about the 98 Hobart as well, just to see how tough it was for some of the other boats out there!

A book which sticks in my mind is 'Tinkerbelle' by Robert Manry which describes his love of boats culminating in a trip across the Atlantic from canada to England in 1965. No worries?? It was in a 13 1/2 foot boat!!!! (thats about 4 metres for you youngun's).

“The strange last voyage of Donald Crowhurst”! Way better than the documentary about him and more interesting than “voyage of the madmen” which told the story of all the competitors in the first round the world solo race.
Must get it back from whoever i loaned it to!!!!

Yeah you should get that book back! Bloody theif ;D

My fav is "All Piss and Wind" by David Salter. He is a little hung up on displacement vs. planing, but a fun and light hearted read. Could no put it down.

Another I could not put down was the book of NewsCorp in the last of the Volvo 60 RTW's (2000/01 ??)

Ahh, Rob Mundle.

I love the part when they were blasting across the Southern Ocean dodging 'bergs, there was what looked to be two big bergs not that far ahead... they had literally minutes to decide if they shoot the gap (hoping the two were two and not one), or to alter course to go around an end which involved gybing (which in the conditions would have taken quite a while since they had to shift the sails stacked on the rail). One of the younger crew (first time down there) asked Barney Walker what would happen if they hit it - Barney's response was blunt - "we'll die".

Bearing in mind that a sailing book once written, is immediately outdated... in no particular order
"Advanced Racing Tactics" by Dr Stuart Walker. An excellent book, even if out of date on some rules
"Winning" by John Oakley 60's era but excellent insights into what it takes.
"Born to Win" by John Bertrand. Inspirational and motivational!
"The Racing Rules" by Mary Pera (deceased) Now a bit out of date because of rule changes but still an excellent insight into the rules and how to interpret them IN PLAIN ENGLISH
"Elvstrom Explains" By the God himself. A must in every sailing library The guy used to be the first sailor into the bay after winter! Used his Finn as an icebreaker!!
and of course anything by Manfred Curry if you can get your hands on them.
