On board Black Jack - Rolex Trophy - Photo by Christophe Launay

Who will win the 2008 Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race?

Who are you putting your money on this year?

Of course we here at LSD are going for Black Jack and I will have my fingers crossed that they have a great race and do well (and come home safely), but can they win it? With how they have been going they do have a good chance.

This race also marks the 10th anniversary to the 1998 Hobart that claimed 6 lives...

So who is your pick for Line Honours?

Who is your pick for IRC?

LSD will follow the race from Boxing Day.

I have to go for "Dream Lover" the local boat from Scarborough (Bris)
Good luck Rick Morgan and Crew

As for line honers I guess the fastest yacht will always win that not necessarily the best sailors

Boxing Day marks the start of the Great Race, the Rolex Sydney to Hobart.

As of now 1231 (Brissy time and 1331 Sydney time) the yachts are 32.03 minutes into the race.

So far it's been all about Wild Oats XI, probably due to their relationship with race broadcasters Channel 7, and maybe because they are set to break the race record.

It was great to see Black Jack get some media time, with the lads on board having a real chance on being the first Queensland yacht to win the Hobart race on Handicap.

Best of luck to everyone who is racing. For those like me the next few nights will be sleepless as we monitor their progress on the official website.

GO BLACK JACK!!! (LSD has no bias.....!)

P.S. Check out the front page of today's Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

Thats a big call. Can't say I agree with you. I remember a 34' Dunco that got 10th on IRC, Wedgetail a 6th and a 10th.

Wish the guys all the best regardless.

The S2H website is pretty damn slow.

It's impossibly slow this year, just crap!

Set for a thrilling finish in the wee small hours - oh well, guess I'll find out when I wake up :D

The conditions deteriorated overnight so the race record stands

but WOXI got it! Despite tangling up with a 2m shark doing 20kts, they still managed to cross the line around 9:30am local by the looks... just flicked on Foxtel SkyNews and they had the finish (sound only). So a new record of 4 in a row. Well done.

Looks like Cougar II and Quest are gunning for handicap at this stage but some of the other TPs are also close.

On board Wild Oats XI - Andrea Francolini ©

Wild Oats XI wrote themselves into the history books again this morning by winning line honours in the Rolex Sydney to Hobart for the forth consecutive time.

But it was close running between them and Skandia, with a lot of people saying that it would be great if Skandia won.

But it turned out to be Oats.

The next group of yachts are due to finish shortly, including our favourite Black Jack.

Congratulations again to all the crew on board Wild Oats XI and to Skandia for giving them a run for their money.

1. Wild Oats XI - 01:20:34:14 - 28 Dec, 9:34am
2. Skandia - 01:21:41:17 - 28 Dec, 10:41am

I guess they probably didn't imagine that so many people would want to check out the race online. I'm sure next year they will make the site faster.

'Bob Steel still wearing his 2002 Rolex with pride - Rolex Sydney Hobart 2008' Crosbie Lorimer

Bob Steel's Quest (AUS/NSW) has been confirmed as the overall handicap winner of the 64th Rolex Sydney Hobart 2008.

Steel's crew were ninth across the line, finishing at 14.00.37 AEDT on Sunday, 28 December, less than five hours after Line Honours winner Wild Oats XI.

None of the competitors to have finished since Quest have been able to knock her off pole position but, with so many of the fleet still at sea, the CYCA waited until this morning to be certain of the result.

The site hasn't changed for many years... apparently the yacht tracker won an award at some stage... but perhaps it's time!
