The 2009-2012 Racing Rules of Sailing are coming soon. The Blue Book is set to receive some changes, some good and I'm sure, some bad.

Remember the days of "Masterbeam"??? (MASTERERAABEEEAM and Mast Abeam) A fantastic rule and one that I remember calling out as a kid.

The buoyroom rule is set to get a shake up in the new Blue Book as well - interesting!

If you could include a new rule what would it be? Explain your rule and why it would be beneficial for the sport and the improvements it would provide to racing.

The best idea will get a SLAM Cap and Deck Hardware 3mm roll of rope. Entries close 31st May. Same rules apply, 3 rules accepted per person.

ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing 1997-2000 (couldn't find a link for these ones)

I think you mean "Mast Abeam"

"Abeam" from Dictionary.com
–adverb
1. Nautical, Aeronautics. at right angles to the fore-and-aft line: The vessel was sailing with the wind directly abeam.
2. directly abreast the middle of a ship's side.

How about a rule that simply says you must have a good time or one that says all the bullshit must be left on the water and not brought ashore

How about a rule where Huey cooperates by not having more favourable conditions after the race/regatta is finished.

Here is a rule that i am a firm believer should be a rule!

* Prizes/Trophies shall only be awarded when 25% or more of the competing crew of a yacht attend the presentation ceremony. Unclaimed prizes shall be awarded at random to those in attendance!

I have put a similar rule in to our clubs sailing instructions (including the Fairway Challenge NOR)and although not actualy in the SI for the kingfisher night series you don't go you don't get your rum.

Race sponsors pay a lot of money and this is their place to get something back like a free advertising plug

For a while now I have been rather put out by people shamelessly using skill, talent, fitness and a gratuitous lack of excess mass to go faster, plane earlier, and so forth.
It's unfair, and poor sportsmanship.

Amend rule 42 to only ban stored power (engines).

Allow pumping, rocking, ooching and sculling.

Let jury's and on-water umpires call real incidents rather than rule 42 nonsense!

For higher level events, have the fleet elect the protest committee at the briefing from a collection of the sailors taking part, ensure that there is a sufficient pool to hear protests on members of the committee (have been to a few events where this has worked really well). We all know that most people have more respect for the "old hands" and "gentlemen" of the fleet than they do for race committees (no offense to all those hardworking people who support our fun and games) so it would make sense to have them officially form the protest committee which could then handle ALL forms of protest and Redress issues as well as make decisions on issues to do with conflicts with the race committee.
