Service Unavailable…

Recently there was a race that started in Brisbane with yachts heading north for about 300nm. The race website had problems from early on, and then on the race day most people received a “Service Unavailable” screen. It was frustrating not being able to access the information (for which we are spoilt with). (Remember when there was no way of knowing at all…???)

This has sparked me to ask what virtual spectators (you) want in a race website. What do you expect? How often do you expect updates?

We (Johnsee and I) are heavily involved in the Brisbane to Keppel Race, and are always trying to think of new ways to update those watching the race from a computer.

So… Give us some ideas of what makes a great race website. You never know, one of you ideas may be used! If that’s the case, then come LSD and Deck Hardware gear will come you way.

Black Jack (Peter Harburg) and Evolution Racing (Ray Roberts) just after the start of the 2009 Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race – 2010 Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race

The Notice of Race for the 2010 Club Marine Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race was released today, Sunday 11 April and already four yachts have entered the 348 nautical mile race.

Scheduled to start on Friday 6 August at 1500 hours, the race will see yachts travel north past Gladstone and into tropical Queensland with a finishing destination just outside Keppel Bay Marina at Rosslyn Bay.

Now in its fourth year race organisers are hoping for a 30-40 fleet turn out.

‘The race is gathering momentum and is fast becoming the next big Queensland offshore race,’ said Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron Commodore Russell McCart, owner and skipper of the Farr 40 Night Nurse.

Denis Thompson, of Audi Victoria Week and Audi Hamilton Island Race Week success is back on board as Principal Race Office for the Brisbane to Keppel race.

‘This is a really fun race. The finishing destination is perfect and as yachts cross the finishing line they head straight into the marina,’ said Thompson.

The Club Marina Brisbane to Keppel Tropical Yacht Race is the signature yachting event for the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.

The Race Record was set in 2009 by Black Jack, the Reichel Pugh 66 owned by Peter Harburg and skippered by Mark Bradford. Record Time: 29 hours 24 minutes 11 seconds

AIS camp for Australian Womens Match Racing Team Italy 9-16 April 2010

PRESS RELEASE 12.04.2010
By Angela Farrell

The Australian Womens Match Racing Team are mid-way through their first European tour for 2010, having taken Silver and 5th place at the recent Tropheo Princessa Sofia Event in Palma Mallorca, and will compete at another World Cup Event in two weeks in Hyeres, France. With a short break in between these events, the ten-woman squad has taken up the opportunity to spend an intensive two week block at the Australian Institute of Sport European training centre in Varese, Italy, to improve their strength and fitness as they work towards Gold in London 2012.

The AIS European Training Centre (ETC) was set up to give athletes who do most of their competitions in Europe access to world-class facilities and expertise from the Institute in Canberra so they can train as they would at home – without the 30 hour flight. The base is used exclusively by Australian athletes, giving them a level playing field (if not an edge) on their European rivals. State of the art facilities include ice-bath units to aid in recovery after heavy training days, access to a fully equipped gym and pool, a live-in Physio, an in-house restaurant preparing nutritious meals, and plenty of hills and lakes for Cross-Training. Varese sits 400m above sea level – which makes cardio training here even more valuable to Aussie athletes.
