The Presidents Adventure

UPDATE Monday 5 May @ 1721
Current Location: Yorkeys Knob

From Brisbane to Bunbury

Yachting Queensland President Ken Hurling is 3 days into what could be a six week adventure…

He is taking a Fusion 40 Cat from Brisbane (Manly Harbour) Queensland to Bunbury in Western Australia.

That’s about 9,000 nautical miles…

There are two on board. Ken, and some guy he met, who goes by the name of Macca. That’s all we really know about him…

Anyway, Ken is offering a bottle of Rum for the person who guesses his arrival time in Bunbury.

Departed: Tuesday 28th April @ 1145 hours

Whoever has the closest guess wins the Rum!

Guesses close on Friday 15th May.

When I last spoke to Ken (yesterday sometime) he was was off Airlie.

More updates will come as I receive them.

Jessica Watson – Youngest Round. ?

This youngster, just 16 years of age, is planning on sailing around the world single handed. That’s right, she is just 16.

Now there has been a lot of talk about this since the news arrived in our inboxes. I personally think it’s fantastic that she is even going to attempt the record, whereas someone else thinks that it’s ludicrous that her parents are even letting her try. Because she is so young.

As a parent, would you let your 16 year old child attempt this record?

As a parent, would you let your 16 year old son attempt this record?

As a parent, would you let your 16 year old daughter attempt this record?

If something goes wrong will she have the physical strength to fix it? How about her mind set? There are so many questions…

Jessica Watson is setting out to become the youngest person to sail solo non-stop and unassisted around the World.

Since Joshua Slocum first sailed singlehanded around the world in the late 1890’s, sailors of all nationalities and ages have been drawn to this ultimate challenge: The Everest of sailing.

Slocum’s epic tale of his voyage, “Sailing Alone Round the World”, has captivated a global audience of readers for over a hundred years.

Following on, record-breaking solo circumnavigations by heroes like Francis Chichester and Robin Knox-Johnston have captured the attention and the hearts of people all over the world.

Inspired in her turn by Kay Cottee, the first woman to sail solo non-stop unassisted around the world and by Jesse Martin, the youngest person to do so, Jessica Watson has set her sights on shattering Jesse’s record.

In the process, Jessica hopes to inspire young sailors, adventurers and everyone with a dream in their heart.

I think, as sailors, that we should wish her the best of luck with her venture – it’s a brave task that she will be undertaking, and I know personally that I would never be able to do it – so go girl!!!

At the end of the day, the people backing her have faith, so I think we should put that same faith in her as well.

Sports Boat Division for Audi Hamilton Island Race Week 2009

As Audi Hamilton Island Race Week continues to expand under the guidance of supermaxi owner Bob Oatley and his family, the consensus is that the regatta should continue to extend its appeal to the widest possible spectrum of sailboats.

This year the expansion will include an invitation to the owners and crews of one of the sport’s most exciting forms, Sports Boats, to be part of what is Australia’s most awarded regatta.

Organisers of the 26th edition of Race Week – which will be staged from August 22 to 29 – are planning a special division for Sports Boats. Beyond that, if any particular class that fits within this category is present in numbers, they will compete in their own division.

“In creating this opportunity we are looking to meet all the requirements this exciting style of racing demands, including having special courses,” said Hamilton Island’s CEO, Glenn Bourke. “We will also do everything we can to make it as easy as possible for owners and crews to compete.

“There’s no doubt the island-laced tropical waters around Hamilton Island are among the best in the world for racing this type of boat, so we look forward to welcoming them in 2009 and developing a strong relationship with them in the years ahead.”

Bourke certainly knows what he is talking about when it comes to the Sports Boat concept. The three-time Laser World Champion and Olympian also has a Laser SB3 UK championship to his credit.

It will be a very special Audi Hamilton Island Race Week in many ways in 2009 with the opening of the magnificent new Hamilton Island Yacht Club, and the highly impressive, world-class Hamilton Island Golf Club will be put to the test. These will bring an even more stimulating dimension to an onshore social agenda which will match the excitement of the racing.
