		<description>THE TSSSC CENTENARY OF SAILING YOUTH REGATTA AND THE &#039;OLD SALTS CUP&#039;

Over the Gold Coast Show long weekend, 31st August to 2nd September 2007, The Southport School Sailing Club (TSSSC) will host the inaugural contest for the Centenary of Sailing Trophy. The regatta will be a three day competition for youth and junior athletes and is destined to become the immediate signature event of TSS Sailing Club and a premiere junior and youth regatta for the region.

The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) celebrates 100 years in 2007 and the first weekend in September has been dedicated the “Sail the World” weekend where all clubs, associations, classes and agencies will join together in a global celebration of sailing. In honour of the centenary of ISAF and over a hundred years of sailing at TSS, the TSS Sailing Club is proud and excited to announce the creation of the Centenary of Sailing Regatta to commemorate this historic occasion.

“TSS Sailing has always been a dominant force in local and regional competition, and for a relatively small sport it has produced more Club, Regional, State, National and International Champions than just about any other sport on offer at TSS” states TSS Director of Sailing, Drew Hulton-Smith; “Despite this consistent and longstanding success and a history of our members traveling great distances to compete, the club has never really had a high-profile open invitation event to bring other sailors down to our exceptional location on the Nerang River.”

As well as providing a much needed vehicle for the promotion of youth and junior sailing on the Gold Coast, the Regatta also brings a point of focus for all the TSS “Old Boys” who earned their sea-legs at the TSS Sailing Club over the years. On the afternoon of Friday 31st August, all Old Southportonians are invited to compete in the “Old Salts Cup” before enjoying the hospitality of the TSS Friends of Sailing support group as guests of the Club for the evening. Mr Hulton-Smith remarked, “One of the most impressive aspects of TSS is the strength and value of the “Old Boys” network, whose association also celebrates its centenary in 2007. It’s time that TSS Sailing presented an opportunity like this to bring back everyone who has enjoyed this remarkable facility over the years.

Just some of the TSS Old Boys of note include Australian Sailing Team Member and International 470 Sailor Mat Belcher, International Contender Youth World Champion Kym Peterson, and a host of sailors such as Lee Randall and Brady Lowe with State and National Corsair titles under their belts. The current crop of upcoming champions includes Sabot National Champion and Australian Youth Olympic Festival team member Nick Peate and leading International Optimist skipper Sean Ott.

After its inauguration during the Sail the World weekend in 2007, The Centenary of Sailing Regatta will be held perpetually over the Gold Coast Show long weekend every year. Entry is open to all sailors who are under 19 years of age as at 31st December 2007 and all classes of monohull off-the-beach dinghies are eligible. Racing will be held on the Nerang River between the Sundale Bridge and Chevron Island on Windward/Leeward and passage course configurations.

The final schedule of events is subject to change and will be published in the official Notice of Race available from the TSSSC Office or www.tss.yachting.org.au The provisional schedule is as follows:

Friday 31st August 2007

Registration, Measurement and Inspection
Preliminary Competitors Briefing
Invitation Trophy Race - all Junior and Youth Classes
The Old Salts Cup Race - all Old Southportonians
Official Opening and Welcome Ceremony
Competitors Dinner

Saturday 1st September

Breakfast
Registration, Measurement and Inspection
Official Competitors Briefing
Windward/Leeward Sprint Races
BBQ Lunch
Racing Continues (up to 8 races this day)

Sunday 2nd September

Breakfast
Official Competitors Briefing
“Three Bridges” Passage Race
BBQ Lunch - Father’s Day Special
Trophy Presentation

The regatta will deliver an excellent standard of competition and is expected to draw some of the most talented youth sailors from south-east Queensland and beyond. Some very special surprises are in planning for the Father&#039;s Day Lunch with more details to come as they evolve. A variety of sponsorship opportunities are available however negotiations need to be undertaken swiftly.
