SY “Adix” with her new Doyle Classic Inventory

Doyle Sails New Zealand are extremely pleased to report the success of the first sea trial onboard “Adix” in Valencia Spain over the past two weeks. Captain Paul Goss was delighted with the profiles, achieving maximum size first time, meeting all expectations. The camber depths, traditional style and strengths were matched precisely to “Adix”, at 217’ OA and she is one of the largest classic schooners on our oceans today. Great care and detail while in consultation with the captain Paul Goss, has allowed all nine sails to bend precisely onto the spars requiring only small adjustments to the lashings as the sails ease into their classic shapes.

Great thanks go out to the Bud Nalder, who managed the project and to the production team at Doyle New Zealand, building a beautiful product meeting the Classic finish with engineering to withstand the enormous loads this schooner creates under full sail. The boat has been know to sail 300 odd days of the year and will often sail on and off her mooring without the need for starting the engine.

The upwind sail area is in excess of 1300m2 requiring a custom run of over 3000mt of specially made Classic Cream Dacron. Special attention was given to the colour and consultation with Contender Sailcloth New Zealand has produced a custom colour that was fitting to the boats existing sails and covers which is very important to the owner’s
requirements!

Bud Nalder, along with Simon Kidd, travelled to Valencia for a two week period completing the installation of custom slides and hanks before bending the sails to these enormous spars. The new custom slides have been designed and manufactured to overcome the constant breaking and maintenance required by the old slides on the Foresail, Gaff Mainsails and Gaff Mizzen. These new slides are five times stronger and, with a special Teflon coating, slide perfectly up the rig.
