Well, it is easy to concentrate on keeping the boat flat & tiller straight if you have the right trim!

Otherwise, with dirty bottom, wrong tension & sheeting all the hiking & steering will not help you. IMHO

I have just recently rediscovered the thrill of sailing and have purchased a 505 along with my son. I have found your site to be of great interest. The above article has helped me realise that sailing is control of the basics and the technical skills will follow in time. I have had a huge amount of help from the local fleet of 505 and am continually suprised at the easy way help is constantly offered in the sailing ferturnity.

I total agree with this, I have been sailing for about 6 and a 1/2 years and I have been competive for about 4 years. for all the years before I started racing in fleets with more than 2 sailors.

I spent my whole time training in the ocean at Fremantle Sailing club, watching, listing, learning, and practicing everything that crossed my eyes. I became very good but I lacked the competive streak in my body and as such I need to start doing regatta's more club training but at other clubs (as well as FREO) to become competive.

Now the first day I entred a major race I looked so smooth on the water because of all the time I spent just doing BASIC training and improving the basic skills of tacking, gybing, body movement, sail trim, and my favourite pumping.

Out on the water I looked like a champ the only thing holding me back was the fact that because I had no coaching except from my dad I couldn't read the wind, couldn't read the other sailors to see what side of the course they might head, and I was not agressive in holding my position anywhere except at the lunch table.

So I guess that top qauiltiy sails, best boats, lightests equipment or even posh/hip/fancy sailing cloths wins the race, it all comes down to skills, and I found this out the easy way because I did all that basic training over and over every weekend for 2 years.

Now the other important thing that will win you races is FITNESS, if you can hike hard and longer, if you can sail for longer periods of time and still have energy in reserve, and if you can concentrate longer then the other guy infront of you, you will most likely beat them because your physicaly and mentaly more fit.

Thats all I have to say, thank you to those few that choose to read this. Good luck in you next sailing race or regatta and best of winds to you.
