Queensland. The Smart State???

This map clearly shows that the the family across the road lives in another time zone.
See you at 8? Ok, so that’s 9 my time or 7? So will I see you at… Um… Geez, I’ll just see you next winter!

Since some stupid IQ test was broadcast on national television the Queensland Government decided to launch an initiative to become known as the “Smart State”. To this day the residents of what was formally known as the “Sunshine State” are still trying to understand why their tropical region was banished from the catchy phrase to a tag that ensured they were constantly criticised for actually being a little silly.

The Smart State is a Queensland Government vision of a State where knowledge, creativity and innovation drive economic growth to improve prosperity and quality of life for all Queenslanders.

The Smart State is about investing in a sustainable economic future for Queensland. It’s about ensuring future generations of Queenslanders continue to enjoy the lifestyle and environment we have now.

Blah blah blah…

For those offshore and outside Australia, Queensland is the only eastern state that does not partake in the summer fantasy of Daylight Savings. The time of the year when beaches are swamped with people enjoying the tropics however this is only in the southern states. Victoria, which is predominately a wrap-yourself-up-in-a-blanket state, has Daylight Savings and enjoy the additional hour they are blessed with by the simple twist of the big and little hand of a clock.

Whilst the other states of the “Lucky Country” gain an additional hour of light, the state with the pristine beaches, coral reef and crisp fresh atmosphere are in bed an hour earlier all because the Government refuses to allow and extra 60 minutes of daylight to shine on the residents.

How can this be the “Smart State”? How can Queensland claim the title of being intellectually advanced when something so simple isn’t understood, respected and granted to the dwellers who reside on its soil?

The Gold Coast region incorporates both Queensland and New South Wales land. Some people actually live in New South Wales, but work in Queensland, sometimes only having to travel 5 or 10 minutes to work, however in the summer having to ensure they plan their schedules around living and working in two different time zones!

0900 in NSW = 1000 in QLD. Is that right? Or is it the other way around??? Hmmm…

Start work at 0900 in QLD = Get up at 0600, breakfast, shower, read the paper, check emails and watch a little TV until about 0730, leave home get to work at say 0800 NSW time which actually equals 0900 in QLD time!!! By the time you finish work your body clock has done 9 hours as appose to the standard 8 hours which the Queenslander would have done.

Confused yet? Hang on, if it’s… um… Hmmm… What time is it again???

Why do we need the extra hour of light in the morning??? Think of all the afternoon sailing that Queenslanders are missing out on simply because the sun still sets about 1800 hours whereas in the other states there is light until 2000 hours, with the BBQ going, mates catching up and enjoying the gorgeous weather that Australia offers. However meanwhile the state that potentially has the best weather in the country are turning on the flood lights in an effort to reflect the sunshine their southern friends are enjoying.

It would be smarter if Queenslanders were in the same time zone as the other eastern states instead of attempting to solve a mathematical problem each and every time they wished to venture south or phone their mates on the other side of the fence.

I mean COME ON!!! Really???

Who are these people that DON’T want the sun to stay up longer???
