Casey continues to “Finn” around the world
Olympic Test Event Wrap up..
Last night was the closing ceremonies/awards ceremony and boy, what a show! The Chinese were not afraid to use copious amounts of fireworks - the stage was packed with them and they kept going off throughout the show, 20 metres from us! The show included pop singers, opera singers, acrobats, traditional Chinese dance and lasted nearly three hours.
It was very inspiring to watch the medal ceremonies and listing to the countries national anthems. In two years time I want it to be me on that podium.
The whole regatta has been an exceptional experience. The city of Qingdao has certainly put there best face forward draping a city of 8 million with banners for the sailing and Olympics, greeting all the sailors with a smile and generally being very helpful and happy to have us.
It was essential to come to Qingdao it was important for me to have the experience of the venue area, the racing track and the city.
I finished in 12 position overall, in the final days racing conditions were fresh to frighting for me in the Finn… In the laser it would have been all smiles. In the 15 – 20 knots of breeze and big waves I struggled and finished right at the back of the fleet.
In the final race I gave it all I had and got to the top mark in 7th place, that was good as I’m giving away 20 kg’s on most of competition. I could not hold my position but I got to see first had at the power and strength required to pump and accelerate the boat on the waves.
I have ordered all my new equipment 2 new Devoti Finns from ITA, 5 sails from North Sails UK and 3 Wilke masts from SUI.
So next stop Finn Europeans Palamos Spain.
Regards
Brendan
