Size does matter!

Sorry guys, but it would seem that when it comes to yachts, size really does matter! Well maybe not for normal everyday regattas, but it definitely does when you go to enter the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup.

Name dropping can sometimes get you anywhere you want, which is the angle ABN AMRO 1 was using when entering the regatta.

“Yo, we are ABN AMRO 1. You can call us ‘Black Betty’. We want to race in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. So, put us down, and we’ll see you on the water. Oh yeah!”

Ok, so maybe the conversation didn’t exactly go like that but the crew from ‘Black Betty’ couldn’t use the hot racing yachts reputation of winning the Volvo Ocean Race to gain entry into the IRC Racing division for the prestige Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo Italy.

Instead of having their times matched with the likes of Wild Oats, Alfa Romeo and Morning Glory one of the fastest racing yachts in the world was entered into the Racing VOR division where they are matched up with the Volvo 60 Amer Sport Too. Not really an even match so the crew racing on Black Betty from the 3rd to the 9th of September are enjoying the scenery in Porto Cervo.

Despite the Volvo 70 not being “long” enough to race against the Maxis do you think the rule should have been overlook on this occasion? Should the winner of the Volvo Ocean Race, ABN AMRO 1, have the right to enter into the IRC division because of her reputation?

Should size matter?
