Six degrees of sailing separation

I work at RQYS and I’m friends with Sea Bogan, who is mates with Jen who owns a yacht in the marina, Jen has Vicki as a crew member and she is friends with Briony from the UK, who is a great mate of Ant’s from SoulSailor, whom as we all know, is a member of the unique sailing community and online blogging world. There you have it! Somehow Ant and I are connected through sailing and we have never even met.

And what about the girl who was sailing with that guy who used to live with the other bloke from Sydney who moved there from NZ who used to crew with the fellow from the boat that was owned by the father of the girl who used to race with Johnsee.

The sailing world is small.

Everyone knows someone who knows someone else who knows the other person who is friends with the sister who used to live next door to the guy who lent a batten to the bloke at the nationals whose father is a professional yachtsman.

“They say” that sailing is an elitist sport (my thoughts on elite will come at a later date), however I believe that it’s one of the smallest and most tight knit communities in the world. Not elite, but rather unique.

Johnsee is bang on the mark with the kindness of those who sail. Idling in a channel and almost everyone asking if you are ok… Genuine sincerity. You never know if the person you offer to help knows someone else that you know.

I’m 97% certain that we here in cyber-blogging-land are all connected in some way. We may have been at the same regatta or know of someone whom has competed in a regatta against someone else who blogs on our sites. I know that Tillerman will be racing against my Dad if he goes to Portugal for the Laser Worlds in 2007. (Look out Tillerman!)
