Socceroo’s knock off Australia II’s title???

I DON’T THINK SO!

I was totally shocked to read on Sail-World that if the Socceroo’s had beaten Brazil in the first round of the Football World Cup in Germany then they would have challenged Australia II’s win in the 1983 America’s Cup as Australia’s most memorable sporting moment.

How can you compare these two?

Australia II claimed the most memorable moment in this countries sporting history because they defeated the American’s to break the 132 year winning streak. This is over and beyond that of a little football match with guys running around on a pitch, falling over for no particular reason and shouting meaningless cries at the referee.

What I want to know is how you can compare a first round match to a nail biting final.

But am I wrong in thinking this? Am I bias to my love of sailing and the memories of sitting on my Dad’s lap as the Aussies got the gun over the line? Does the painting of them winning the cup hanging proudly on my wall hinder my opinion? Does the model yacht of Australia II sitting on the chest of draws in front of my computer entice me to lean towards the sailing champions?

No, I don’t think so.

However, I do support the Socceroo’s and am often heard shouting at the Plasma screen in the living room in the wee hours of the morning.

What is your opinion? Socceroo’s or Australia II?
