Sailing – It’s more than just a sport…
I have been sailing since I was 3 years old, which means for the past 23 years my feet, hands, arms, legs, head, hair and even eyes have been immersed in salt water at some time or another. Sailing has been a huge part of my life, but not only that, it has been the birth place to some of my greatest friendships that I know will stand the test of time and be there forever.
My Dad was the one who introduced me to the world of boats, and for my third birthday built me a sabot which we launched together in the family pool. It would be at least 4 months before I was allowed to actually sail it on the river which backed onto our Northern New South Wales home. I remember that being one of the happiest moments of my life…
But it’s more then just the sailing experience that makes this sport so special. It’s the people behind it that ensure everlasting memories. I have met some amazing people in my time, from Olympic Champions, America’s Cup competitors, Volvo 70 Ocean Race crew, World Champions, National Champions and State Champions and even the guy in the back of the fleet who makes the start line every week just to enjoy the feeling.
Enemies are born at start lines, but friendships carved at the finish. A handshake and laugh and even a beer can wash away the events that took place on the course and a new era of sailing mates emerges.
The message here is value your friendships. Stay in touch with the people you meet whilst on the water and nurture the relationships that develop over time. You never know… That person you meet may never again be able to experience the thrill of a start line or gybe mark, so make every moment matter…
