A never ending argument…
Its been a topic of conversation in yacht squadrons, sailing clubs, marinas, on rigging lawns, start lines, finish lines, upwind, downwind, up masts, in sail lofts, chandleries, magazines, newspapers, brochures, bus stops, taxi ranks, train stations, airports, on planes, cruise ships and even while fishing. At weddings, christenings, funerals, BBQ’s, high school reunions, hotel lobbies, and in every yachtie bar in existence…
A topic that divides a crowd into three and often ends in tears…
Monohulls versus Catamarans versus Trimarans.
Mono versus Cat versus Tri.
One hull versus two hulls versus three hulls.
Monoslow versus Catwacca versus Pickle Fork.
I have sailed all three, and in my opinion, they all have their place on our rivers, lakes, bays, seas and oceans, however some of us are not as open minded as me, and this is where the argument begins…
A wise old man once quoted “A monohull is half a boat, a catamaran is a full boat but a trimaran is a boat and a half!â€
Another wise old man was overheard saying “Why have one hull when you can have two! I grew out of training wheels long ago, so three is just too many!â€
And the third old wise man was caught whispering “Mono all the way and here lays the end of the discussion…â€
Three old but much wiser women were beating them all to the top mark while they were still arguing over who was bigger and better and overall Ruler of the Water.
Hmmm…
At the end of the day I’m a huge fan of one-design racing. It’s the only true form of competition no matter what class you choose and separates the men from the mice, women from the wombats and the champion from the loser.
Ponder on this thought…
If you had a million dollars to spend on a Mono, Cat or Tri tomorrow, which would chose and why?
