For the LOVE of…!!!

With Valentines Day fast approaching the world (and Hallmark) are gearing up for what is described as the most romantic day of the year.

YAWN!!! Seriously, what makes this day so damn special? Why is the 14th of February considered to be the date where it’s mandatory for those in a relationship to flower their partner with gifts, surprises and even proposals. I just don’t get it.

So what’s the big deal regarding Valentines Day anyway? Where does this heart throbbing day originate from?

The History Channel website:
One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men — his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Wilstar:
the Romans had practiced a pagan celebration in mid-February commemorating young men’s rite of passage to the god Lupercus. The celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned to each young man in that manner would be his sexual companion during the remaining year.

Wikipedia:
St. Valentine’s Day falls on February 14, and is the traditional day on which lovers in certain cultures let each other know about their love, commonly by sending Valentine’s cards, which are often anonymous. The history of Valentine’s day can be traced back to a Catholic Church feast day, in honor of Saint Valentine. The day’s associations with romantic loveMiddle Ages, during which the concept of romantic love was formulated.

Uncyclopedia:
February 14th – Saint Valentines Day – The day that Thaddeus used his divine power to execute Saint Valentine for not facing Ontario when he prayed. Saint Valentine also cut off his ponytail and neglected his tie-dye coat. Thaddeus became angry and demolished him. Cupid, brother of Jesus and Pedro, is a mythical beast whom causes mayhem and misery with his arrows of love. He fires them willy-nilly into the genitals of lovers, wounding them and causing them to be unable to make love.

Long story short, love is nature’s way of tricking people into reproduction. It is a generally useless emotion used to waste time, money, effort, brain cells, and yogurt; biologically, it’s no different from eating large quantites of chocolate. Or burning all your money. You know, a sort of pain-pleasure, euphoria-despair, wax-on-wax-off type thing.

So I guess your wondering what this little article has to do with sailing and boats and stuff. Well nothing really, I just felt the need to conform with the rest of the world and point out that Valentines Day is happening and we all have to deal with it.

For all those out there is LSD land who have a special someone, think long and hard about the plans you make for Valentines Day. Would you make the same effort at any other time of the year? Why not just go for a sail instead!

Hmmmm… I wonder if I will have a Valentine this year… I’m a sucker for punishment!!!
