Enough of the Volvos, OG went sailing!!!

(Johnsee was there too…)

Yes my friends, the statement is true. I actually got off my derrière and felt the cool breeze flow through my hair and tasted the salty air for the first time in a long time.

You see, that’s the problem with the profession I have chosen. I’m at the waters edge every day of the week but can rarely exchange my deckies for a good old pair of sailing boots… It’s quite depressing really…

(sigh…)

Some of my well trained employees have noticed my lack of presence on the water of late and did everything in their power to drag me onto a Farr 36 for Friday Night Twilight Sailing at our little club.

One thing to point out is that I was absolutely exhausted from a massive week at work, and had only completed my daily tasks just a few minutes prior to us having the leave the dock. But I gave in to their overpowering whines and whinges realising how sad my life would be if I spent another Friday night at home falling asleep to the distant humming of my computer…

(I seriously need a change of scenery!!!)

So there we were…

Cruising out to the start line was a pack of Sailing School Instructors and their mentally frail boss bound for Hope Banks and back again. It wasn’t long before the tiller was handed my way and they insisted I sail them around until my little hearts content.

Our Mentor for the evening guided us through our duties and the crew jumped into action to make the voyage worth while. I was secretly in heaven with the tiller between my fingers and feeling the fresh air brush by my face. It was divine and I was in love. I was home. This was what I needed, but I wouldn’t let them know that, as I never like to give my Instructors the satisfaction of them thinking they were right. (I am never wrong!)

We powered over the fleet in what is normally described as a tug of a boat and showed the other crews our talent of finding the groove. She loved how we worked her (the boat) and She gave us the contentment we all secretly crave.

Heading into Hope Banks and sitting in a comfortable third place we readjusted our night vision as there were numerous photos being taken on the foredeck. After an ear bashing from the skipper (I never really yell) the crew sprung into action to round the mark and hoist the kite. Keeping in mind these Instructors normally sail in boats a tad smaller than the Farr, they managed to overcome the darkness and fly the kite just after we planed into second place two sail reaching.

We were on fire!

Crossing the finish line at 20:17:15 placed us 2nd over the line and 3rd on handicap, an absolutely awesome effort for a bunch of sailors who normally potter around the bay with students in tow. But the thing is… I wanted to go sailing today as well, but was quickly snapped back into the dark reality of working life and faced 52 students and 16 instructors for another day in the office.

It was a tease… I desire for more… Where will my next tiller come from…?
