A story of survival

There are a few things one must remember before venturing out onto the bay, to sea, or for an ocean crossing.

First of all it’s a good idea to make sure you tell someone where you are going…

Then there is the matter of ensuring you have enough safety supplies, food and plenty of water (and or beer depending on your health requirements)

Don’t forget the fishing rods, crab pots and bait!

Oh, and the very important factor of the bungs. Always remember the bungs!

Once you have all of these things ready to go, you are set, and on your way for a great day on the water.

Let’s say you plan on going out onto the picturesque Moreton Bay. A perfect place to kick back and ease the stress and worries of everyday life and to enjoy the surreal surroundings of the gorgeous Queensland coast.

There you are… lying back in the boat and gazing towards the heavens. Thinking to yourself… “Ahhh… I have sailed the world and seen many amazing sights, but nothing compares to a day on the bay with a mate and a few beers…”

The crab pots are set and the fishing lines cast. Fresh beverages have been served and the peace and serenity is all around. The time passes by and the day begins to fade, and sadly you realise it’s time to head home and join the hectic pace of reality once more…

The lines are brought in and crab pots collected. No fish were caught, and just a handful of small crabs were once again scurrying around the bay floor. But it didn’t matter… For the day was not about the prize at the end, but rather that of the bonding between mates and enjoying the company of times gone by.

But it’s inevitable… The time has come to head home… And as the key is turned and only small bubbles emerge from the engine you think back to the mornings check list…

Safety supplies, food and plenty of water (oh and beer for health reasons) – Check!

Fishing rods, crab pots and bait – Check!

Bungs. Always remember the bungs – Check!

But as the engine fails to kick over, it’s realised that one important factor was missed from the all important list…

Fuel… ALWAYS REMEMBER TO PUT FUEL IN THE TANK!!!

With heads lowered and despair brewing, it’s time to make the rescue phone call to shore.

“OG… How are you today? You know how great we think you are… Is there any chance you could pop out onto the bay and tow us in?”

Tears of laughter rolled down my face as two prominent members of RQYS required a rescue mission from 2 miles north of Green Island.

Shall I disclose the names of these members??? Shall I release their identity to the world??? Or shall I sit on my knowledge and use this information in the future… For I too may need rescuing some day…
